April Showers bring … Pine Siskins?

Jody has counted birds for Cornell’s Project Feederwatch for years. This winter her weekly counts have been down considerably from past years, which I attribute in part to the loss of a large Sunset Maple in our back yard last year (very sad).

But during the past several weeks there have been even fewer birds showing up to snack at our feeders. What’s going on? The obvious conclusion was “nesting time”…

So this week we finally received three sure signs of Spring, four-plus inches of rain, new buds on our vine maple, and several visiting Pine Siskin fledgelings like this one in our back yard.

Cheers – DJD
Rain this past week: 4.25 inches.
