Winter Comes to Our Back Yard

Winter came to our back yard this week but not in the conventional way.

Yes, it was cold, as evidenced by the fluffed-out Flicker who was trying to stay warm while guarding the suet feeder. But Winter didn’t start with a nice blanket of beautiful white snow. No, we do things differently in Portland.

We get to start Winter with freezing rain.

The freezing rain temporarily transformed our feeder into a crystal chandelier.

These Lesser Goldfinches weren’t bothered by the jail-bar like ice-cycles. They were just happy to find dry birdseed on a cold wintery day.

Cheers – DJD
Rain since last posting: 14.0 in. 2014 year to date: 44.0 in. (Yes, it has been raining!!)
