Wounded Soldier

The focus of this 4th of July weekend is to celebrate our country’s independence with lots of parades, food, friends, fireworks, and sunblock. In Portland we also celebrate with the annual Waterfront Blues Festival (which also includes food, friends, fireworks and sunblock).

But I’m reminded of the saying “Freedom isn’t Free”. And of course when we’re the recipient of something that has a price, it must have been paid by someone. So who is this person or persons worthy of thanks for paying the price of freedom?

Some say those who stand up to injustice, speak out against tyranny and protest for various social causes are the ones earning our freedom. You see them on the news every day displaying their “righteous anger” for the crowds and the cameras.

But I say those who have put themselves in harm’s way and even given their lives in the process of protecting us from the ones who seek to take our freedom away have paid the ultimate price. These are the wounded and fallen soldiers who truly deserve my thanks this weekend.

“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” – John 15:13
