Deadbeat Dads

Since it’s nesting season, Jody and I were doing a little research and came to the shocking discovery that male Anna’s hummingbirds are basically “deadbeat dads”.

Aside from his impressive courtship flight dive, the male Anna’s hummingbird does little else with regard to raising a family. Males and females do not form lasting pair bonds. The males leave the females to construct the nest, incubate the eggs, and feed the nestlings on their own. That’s a pretty good description of a deadbeat dad to me.

So here’s a shout-out to all the dads who take an active role in raising their families and don’t follow the Anna’s example.

Happy Father’s Day!

Cheers – DJD
