Who’s Idol?

Note from author: Please pardon the following rant… This week’s picture title, by the way, is “Dinner at Sunset”.

This past week on American Idol a contestant was “voted off”. During this phase of the show that is what happens. Every week someone has the fewest votes and they are eliminated. So what’s the big deal?

Well, the problem this week was the person, Pia Toscano, with the fewest votes was a lot of people’s favorite (not mine). So there was this big hue-and-cry about how “America got it wrong”!

The judges were outraged. Celebrities like Tom Hanks, Ashton Kutcher and Ellen DeGeneres tweeted their shock and horror. Ex-Idol contestants Jennifer Hudson and Chris Daughtry expressed their disbelief. American Idol blogs and discussion forums were filled with cries to change the voting schemes.

All I have to say is “get over it”! Does anybody really believe this was ever a talent contest?

It’s not. American Idol has alway been first and foremost a business. A TV production to make money by selling commercials, music on iTunes, text messaging charges and concert tickets. It’s all about the money.

But who cares? That’s not necessarily bad. As far as the contestants are concerned, there are no losers at this point. They’ve all gotten excellent exposure and a great start. If they can’t make it in the music business after this, they were never meant to be in the business.

Besides, I think America got it right this time. At lease my favorite is still there.

Cheers – DJD
