Cold New Years Day

This female Anna’s Hummingbird (Mrs. Zippy) is trying to keep warm. With the temperatures hovering around freezing in our back yard, she has fluffed out her normally slender, cigar-shaped body to look more like a small tennis ball in order to trap as much heat as possible.

Since the Anna’s don’t migrate, they have learned all the tricks to survive the winters in our climate. And to help them out, Jody always makes sure we take in the feeders at night (and put them back out first thing in the morning) to keep them from freezing when the weather turns cold.

Here’s wishing you a warm and joyous beginning to a wonderful New Year!

Cheers – DJD

Rain for the week: 4.25 in. Yearly Total for 2010: 87.75 in.
