Close to Death

This beautiful little ball of feathers is not well. He is a very sick Pine Siskin who came to rest in our back yard this week. He was so sick, in fact, that when I tried to coax him out of the feeder he was willing to let me pick him up rather than voluntarily leaving his shelter.

Seeing this little guy, all fluffed out just trying to keep warm and live a little longer, illustrates how fragile life is. And on this Thanksgiving Day weekend it’s an extra reminder to me of how thankful I am for the gift of life and the warmth of friends and family that surround me.

Cheers – DJD
