Our New “Pet”

Another rainy week in Portland. But we have a new pet in our back yard.

This juvenile squirrel showed up a week or so ago and practically knocked Jody down running to the feeder she was filling. He hasn’t yet developed the usual caution towards humans or other animals and let me get right up in his face to take his portrait with my 50mm lens.

Earlier this week, Jody observed him playing with one of the neighbor’s cats! And as you can see from the second photo, he is willing to eat right out of our hands. With an attitude like this it will be a miracle if he survives the summer.

But for now, he gets to be a backyard pet. And if he’s going to be a pet, we need to call him something other than “dummy”. So If you have any appropriate name suggestions please leave a comment.
