Old Friends

We used to have three tall Birch trees in our back yard. They were grouped together in one corner. When we originally landscaped, we couldn’t get the variety specified in the plan so we got what we could find. They were never really very attractive.

Over the years they gave us welcomed shade in the late afternoons and shelter for the birds. They were also an integral part of the squirrels’ backyard overpass.

Nobody (except me and critters) really like these trees. So when they were damaged by several years of bad winter storms, the only thing that made sense was to take them down.

This is all that’s left of these “old friends”. A little sad. But they still have one more chance to make me smile, when they create a warm glow in our wood stove on a cold winter’s evening next year.

Cheers – DJD
