Cold and Windy…
This Varied Thrush (one of the four that have recently decided our deck is their deck) is trying to tell us that it’s really cold in our back yard. The previous night wasn’t just cold, it was cold and windy.
“Well… How cold and windy was it?” you ask.
If you take a good look toward the back of the bird bath you’ll see something interesting. The ice, which is usually just a flat sheet, has what looks like ripples in it and it’s actually flowing up over the back edge.
The picture below gives a better look at the ice.
The only explanation I can come up with is this. As the ice was forming, the wind was constantly blowing water toward the back of the bird bath which then froze in place. When more water was blown back, it would quickly freeze in place thus building up like a wave flowing over the edge.
Of course all was all melted and gone by the time I got home. So thanks goes to Jody for capturing this interesting event in our back yard.
Cheers – DJD
